Mauritian-African Scholarship Scheme for 2023

Scholarships will be offered to South Africans in August/September 2023 to study full-time, on-campus undergraduates and postgraduates in public higher education institutions in Mauritius for the 2023 academic year.

South Africans who are interested in applying for the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme should contact the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Below you will find information specific to South African applicants. Information on applying for this scholarship is available to applicants from other eligible countries by contacting their respective government or local government representative.

NOTE: As the nominating agency, the DHET is responsible for processing applications and completing selection processes, which are not included in the guidelines below. We will not consider your application if you do not submit your application and supporting documents by the above deadline. 

Who Can Apply for scholarship

General Criteria:

  •  Healthy and academically successful South Africans;
  •  To qualify, candidates must demonstrate a commitment to South Africa’s development and a desire to study in Mauritius;
  •  The candidate must be available in August/September 2023 to begin their academic course of study in Mauritius;
  •  In order to be accepted into a Mauritius study programme, all applicants must meet the entry requirements;
  •  Students applying for a similar program at a South African institution must meet the minimum academic requirements;
  •  English proficiency is required for all candidates;
  •  The applicant must not receive any other scholarship from Mauritius’ public sector;
  •  It is required that students have previously applied to any of the public higher education institutions in Mauritius for the academic year starting in 2023 (proof of application must be provided by 15 May 2023);
  • COVID-19 vaccination regulations should be adhered to by awardees;
  • Mauritian authorities have set up protocols for passengers traveling to Mauritius that awardees must follow;
  • The applicant is required to undergo a medical check-up in Mauritius in accordance with the requirements of the Passport and Immigration Office (http://passport.govmu.org) and the test results must be submitted to the Passport and Immigration Office, along with a copy to the Ministry, within one month of arriving.

The following scholarships are available to undergraduate students:

  •  An average mark of 60% is required in the National Senior Certificate, excluding Life Orientation;
  •  Before January 1, 2024, applicants must be at least 18 years old and not yet 26;
  •  We will not consider candidates with undergraduate degrees.

The following information is required for MPhil / PhD programs:

  •  In order to qualify for a PhD, an applicant must already have a Master’s degree in research or equivalent degree, with a minimum grade point average of 60%, in the related field;
  •  Before 01 January 2024, applicants cannot be older than 40 years old;
  •  The proposed supervisor(s) must be named and accepted in writing by the applicant. Each university’s website has a list of its research themes and interests;
  •  MPhil/PhD applicants are required to submit their research proposal in accordance with the following format with their application
  • There will be no consideration for applicants who already have a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree.

NOTE: The Self-Financing African Students Scholarship Scheme is not open to current Mauritius residents enrolled in the same level of study as they are currently enrolled.
