There are a number of education-related studies offered by the School of Education,

  • associated with Education,
  • Training, and Development,
  • namely Educational Foundation, focusing on education fundamentals,
  • training and development of theories related to educational studies,
  • education management,
  • general didactic theories and work integrated learning
  • Primary Education, focusing on educational development and general education
  • Mathematics, Science and Business Education, with focus on Mathematics, Science and Business Education, with focus on Mathematics, Commercial and Business Studies in Education
  • Technology and Vocational Education, specializing in technology, computer science and vocational training

Departments

Educational Foundation

GET and FE&T phases of the NQF are prepared by the Department of Educational Foundation. There are a variety of disciplinary learning opportunities available within the department, including the foundations of education such as general pedagogical learning, basic learning, and situational learning. 

Maths, Science & Business Education

There are three undergraduate streams in the department:

  • Science (Mathematics,
  • Physical Science and Life science)​, Consumer Studies (Hospitality, Mathematical Literacy)
  • Business (Accounting, Economics and Business Management). 

Students can obtain an Honours’ degree, a Master’s degree, or a Doctorate degree in MSBE through postgraduate courses. 

Primary Education

As part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), the Department of Primary Education prepares teachers for General Education and Training (GET).  Two qualifications are offered in this program: the B.Ed. Primary/Elementary Phase (Grades R-3) and the B.Ed. Primary/Elementary Phase (Grades 4-9). Assessment for Learning and self-regulatory learning are used to prepare teachers for reflective classroom practices.

Various aspects of Education specializations are studied within the field of Technology and Vocational Education, such as

This program integrates the art of teaching with the science of research and community engagement.
